Melbourne and Osaka Universities Hold Joint Workshop on Mitochondrial Science

“MEL-OsakaMito2025 Spring,” an international workshop on mitochondrial science organized jointly by The University of Melbourne and The University of Osaka, was held at the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences (Suita campus) on 5-6 March 2025. The organizing committee was led by Associate Professors Diana Stojanovski and David Stroud from the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology, School of Biomedical Sciences, The University of Melbourne, and Associate Professor OKAMOTO Koji from the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences and Professor ISHIHARA Naotada from the Graduate School of Science, The University of Osaka.

More than 45 researchers participated in MEL-OsakaMito2025 Spring, including 6 from The University of Melbourne and 25 from The University of Osaka. This workshop featured 14 invited speakers, 6 of whom were from The University of Melbourne. They shared their cutting-edge findings on the dynamics of mitochondrial structure and function, and how their defects contribute to disease.

Extensive discussions were encouraged through coffee and tea breaks between sessions, a welcome reception, and a get-together party. As a result, the participants reached a consensus to actively pursue future collaborations, such as hosting the next workshop at The University of Melbourne and applying for a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) international exchange grant.
